Awards : OutdoorGearLab.com Announces Women's Climbing Helmet Awards for 2013

Is it worth it to buy a Women's Specific Climbing Helmet? OutdoorGearLab Announces Editor's Choice and Best Buy winners.

Sep. 19, 2013 - CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- CHEYENNE, WY—OutdoorGearLab.com recently published the results of the 2013 Editors’ Choice Awards for the Women's Climbing Helmet category, listing this year’s best and best value. The OutdoorGearLab Review Editors chose the following winners after extensive field testing in the High Sierra, Yosemite Vally, Tuolumne Meadows, and climbing in the Chalten Massif of Patagonia. We took the three women's helmets on the market and subjected them to head-to-head tests to figure out which was the best in the following categories: comfort, ease of adjustment, weight, ventilation, and ease of headlamp attachment. Some helmets had female specific features, while others were almost identical to unisex versions. View the complete review. (http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Climbing-Helmet-Womens-Reviews)

The winners are:

The Black Diamond Vector – Women's (http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Climbing-Helmet-Womens-Revi...) is the winner of the Editor's Choice Award for 2013. According to Gear Editor McKenzie Long, "The only light foam women's specific helmet, the W's BD Vector even gives the unisex Editor's Choice winner, the Petzl Meteor, a run for its money. Weighing only 8 ounces (229 grams), this is about the same weight as the Meteor, but it looks far more stylish and has larger ventilation holes in the back. For a female in the market for a lightweight foam climbing helmet, we highly recommend this model, which will fit better and look nicer than unisex equivalents.”

The Petzl Elia (http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Climbing-Helmet-Womens-Revi...) wins the Best Buy award for 2013. This award is given to a product that balances an extremely high score in our tests and a very reasonable price. According to McKenzie Long, "The Petzl Elia is the only women's helmet that we tested that has well-thought out women's specific features other than a smaller size and different colors than the men's version. It incorporates a beneficial ponytail accommodating feature for women along the back of the head. This feature added to the already inexpensive and durable design of the unisex Petzl Elios makes this a great all-around helmet for the price.”
